Veritas history
Opened in 1979
Veritas, initially known as Douglas County Christian School, was founded in 1977 following discussions among four couples who were passionate about establishing Christian education in Douglas County. The school welcomed its first cohort of students in the fall of 1979, under the guidance of founders Stegall, Huff, Houston, and Iliff, who emphasized the importance of great literature, languages, and Christian teachings.
In the 1990's, the institution was renamed Veritas Christian School and embraced the Classical Christian education model, which aims to nurture the whole student with the comprehensive truth of Christ. The name "Veritas" itself, Latin for "truth," reflects the school's commitment to living out truth through continuous learning and growth.
High school added in 2004
With the start of the 2004-05 school year, Veritas added tenth through twelfth grades and began offering education opportunities for students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade, thereby offering a complete educational process for children. Students benefit from a highly trained and qualified staff and a wide range of course offerings. On-site library and computer lab facilities provide opportunities for educational support and practical application. Students also enjoy the playground and open areas for recess activities, the multi-purpose room for P.E. and school assemblies, and a hot lunch program.
New facility groundbreaking in 2019
Veritas hosted a 40th Anniversary Gala and Groundbreaking April 16, 2019, on property just south of Lawrence as a new school gym and sports facility. The "Eagle's Nest" hosted its first official games in the 2020/2021 school year.
